Zebra Technologies Introduces New Industrial Strength, Feature Rich, Dual-Sided Eltron P420 Plastic Card Printer

Hi-Speed Printer Enables Dual-Sided Personalized Plastic Cards To Be Issued In Real Time
CAMARILLO, Calif., January 17, 2000 — Zebra Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: ZBRA), the worldwide leader in bar code and plastic card output solutions, announces a new rugged, fully-featured color plastic card printer, the Eltron P420.

The new P420's advanced features include a 32-bit processor, 4 Mbytes of image memory, and 512Kbytes of Flash memory. The unit's rugged all metal enclosure houses a low-maintenance print mechanism that includes self-cleaning card handling, a high capacity ribbon system, a two-line LCD control panel and convenient card reject hopper. The reject hopper separates cards that fail the encoding process prior to printing, saving valuable printer ribbon. The enclosure includes a viewing window that permits the operator to monitor the printing process without opening the unit.

Capable of producing dual-sided, high-resolution, full-color, edge-to-edge printing, the Eltron P420 provides ultra-sharp 300-dpi resolution for precise, readable bar codes, ID photos, graphics, and text. The P420 incorporates a transparent card input hopper with a one hundred 30-mil card capacity, (three hundred 10-mil cards). The unit can print dual-sided cards at the rate of 102 cards per hour - one side in full color and the other side in black (YMCKOK).

Installation of the P420 is plug-and-play using the Microsoft™ Windows™ drivers and card design software that are provided with each unit. In addition, the P420 offers several options including; RS232C serial and USB ports, a "non-scratching" magnetic stripe encoder, and smart card contact station for applications that require encoded cards. The unit's handy reject card hopper prevents improperly encoded cards from being printed.

"Market research told us that users wanted a rugged dual-sided card printer that was simple to operate and maintain," said Holly Sacks, vice president of marketing for Zebra's Eltron Card Printers. "It also had to be fast, and of course it had to print superior quality color cards. I'm pleased to say the P420 achieves all our objectives."

The Model P420 is simple to set up and use. Printer ribbon synchronization is automatic, eliminating the need for operator intervention. An easy to change card-cleaning cartridge thoroughly removes dust from cards before they are printed, resulting in higher quality output.

"With the addition of the Eltron P420 printer, we have further strengthened our position in the card printer market and are now better equipped to capitalize on the growth in the issuance of double-sided multipurpose plastic cards both in the U.S. and worldwide," remarked Sacks.

Applications for the P420 Model include personalized photo ID cards, employee badges, membership, and access control cards, phone cards, library cards - virtually any application where dual-sided personalized plastic cards are a better solution.

Pricing/Availability

The Eltron P420 card printer is scheduled for volume production beginning in March of 2000. List price of the basic model is $4,295. The Eltron P420 card printer features a full one-year printer warranty, including one-year free hot-swap service for units installed in the United States. An optional extended multi-year warranty program is also available.
