CAMARILLO, Calif., June 20, 2000 — Zebra Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: ZBRA), the worldwide leader in bar code and plastic card printers, announces a new full-color plastic card printer with built-in laminator, the Eltron P520.
The P520 offers many new standard features including a USB interface, 32-bit processor, 4 Mbytes of image memory, and an advanced fourth generation laminating station that is performance-tuned for the P520 print engine. The unit's new all metal enclosure houses a high capacity, auto-synchronizing ribbon and laminate system that is simple to load and use. The housing includes a full-length viewing window and operator control panel with two-line LCD. An easy-access card reject hopper collects improperly encoded cards prior to the printing process, preventing any cards which fail encoding from becoming mixed with the final card output.
Capable of printing dual-sided, high-resolution, full-color cards, the Eltron P520 prints 300-dpi (dots per inch) resolution for sharp ID photos, graphics, text and machine-readable bar codes. The P520 incorporates a transparent card input hopper with a 100-card capacity (standard 30 mil cards). The unit can print and laminate cards at the rate of up to 125 cards per hour (single sided, full color, including a 1.0 mil laminate patch).
Installation of the P520 is plug-and-play using the Microsoft™ Windows™ drivers and WindCardÔ card design utilities that are provided with each unit. In addition, P520 features both Centronics and USB interfaces as standard. Options include: RS232C serial port, "non-scratch" magnetic stripe encoder, smart card contact station, and extended warranty programs.
"Customers told us that they wanted a card printer that could inexpensively produce long-life cards. Frequent card use, such as swiping through a barcode or magnetic stripe reader, can wear off the printing on a card over time. Extensive testing proved that adding a laminate patch could increase a card's durability by one-to-three years, depending on the application," said Holly Sacks, vice president of marketing for Eltron Card Printer Products.
"We designed the P520 to print and laminate faster, without sacrificing print quality or resolution. It's the fastest on-demand card printer laminator in its class," said Sacks.
The Eltron P520 is also designed to be easy to use. Printer ribbon and laminate patch synchronization is automatic, eliminating the need for operator intervention. The unique card-cleaning cartridge thoroughly removes dust on cards prior to printing and laminating, resulting in higher quality output.
"With the Eltron P520 printer we have extended our leadership position in the total card printer market, which includes the rapidly growing demand for laminated plastic cards used in government applications such as issuance of driver’s licenses and secure ID cards," remarked Sacks.
Other applications for the P520 include photo ID cards, employee badges, membership and access control cards, library cards - virtually any application where longer life plastic cards are a better solution.

The Eltron P520 card printer / laminator is now in volume production. List price of the basic model is $6,995. The Eltron P520 card printer features a full one-year printer warranty, including one-year free hot-swap service for units installed in the United States. An optional extended multi-year warranty program is also available. |
