CAMARILLO, Calif., August 16, 2002 — Zebra Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq: ZBRA), a worldwide leader in card printing and bar code labeling solutions, today announced that Viisage Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: VISG) is installing 70 of Zebra's Eltron P720 card printers throughout Connecticut to produce more durable driver's licenses and state ID cards with added security features. In a one-step process at the local DMV office, the P720 Dual Sided Color Card Printer with "One-Pass" Linerless Laminator produces full-color dual-sided laminated driver's licenses in as little as 30 seconds. The extra layer of protection provided by the lamination strengthens the driver's license and deters counterfeiting, alteration and duplication. The first of the new licenses is being produced this month. As of September 1, the system will produce all of the state's annual 800,000 licenses and ID cards
Viisage, a leader in the emerging field of biometrics and in providing secure digital identification systems and solutions, is the systems integrator for the State of Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. Viisage's digital identification card systems capture the face image and other information in digital format at their proprietary PC-based "Image Capture Workstation." The workstation is linked to the Eltron P720 to produce an "over the counter" driver's license at individual DMV offices as opposed to issuing licenses from a central bureau.
"We wanted a tough card for the Connecticut driver's licenses and ID cards, ones that would last six to eight years," explains Walter Krepcio, Viisage Director, DL/ID Systems. "We also wanted to print multiple graphics for different types of licenses and add security features, including a hologram. We chose the Eltron P720 because it provides a one-step process, making production simpler and faster for DMV employees. It only takes four hours to learn how to use the entire system and workers are easily trained to use the printer."
The new Connecticut driver's licenses come in several formats, although all showcase a tourism background to promote the state as a place to live and visit. While driver's licenses for those 21 and older come in the standard horizontal or landscape format, those for drivers under 21 are in a vertical or portrait format. Colors in the corner signify whether the card is for a commercial driver's license, operator's license or solely an ID card. The licenses also include many new security features, including a hologram, to combat identity fraud and ensure that people who get their licenses renewed are the same people who applied originally.
The Eltron P720 printers print complex two-dimensional bar codes, encode magnetic stripes and apply an overlaminate, performing all of these functions in a quiet, economical package. Used in other state and national driver's license programs, Eltron printers generate tamper-resistant cards that last five years or more and withstand abrasion, UV lighting exposure, temperature extremes, water, chemicals, bending and folding.
"We look forward to our continued partnering with Viisage in more driver's license projects," emphasizes Veraje Anjargolian, Zebra's VP and General Manager of the Eltron Card Printer Business Unit. "The combination of our best-in-class card printers and comprehensive service in combination with Viisage's acclaimed hardware, software and systems integration provides state DMVs with reliable and authoritative solutions that attest to and protect identities."
