Velocity - When to use the Ivanti Scan Driver and when to use DataWedge as the Scan Driver


Issue / Question

Velocity will be used on the Zebra Android Mobile Device. Should the integrated Ivanti Scan Driver be used, or should DataWedge be used?

Resolution / Answer

When configuring the Velocity Console Project, you will want to decide what Scan Driver the intended Mobile Devices should use.
As a general rule, Mobile Devices with an integrated scanner will use the Ivanti Scan Driver. 

This can be configured by doing the following:

Start the Velocity Console and select the Host tab on the top row:

Select Scanner on the left side.
By default, when creating a new Project, the Scanner Profiles window is blank.  This means that Ivanti is not pre-loading their Scan Driver in the Velocity Project.
To load the Ivanti Scan Driver, you will need to select New.
Select the down arrow to show the available list.

Select Zebra as your Vendor
Then select OK

You will then be presented with all the tabs and options that can be configured through Velocity to control the scanner characteristics:

Symbologies can be Enabled/Disabled, and specific symbology parameters can be set for each Enabled symbology.

*** Another important reason to use the Ivanti Scan Driver ***
If the Velocity Project contains any Scripts that involve the scanner, the Ivanti Scan Driver will be required.  

If the Velocity Project is intended to be used on a device that requires an external scanner, then the DataWedge Scan Driver should be used.  
Ivanti cannot control the configuration of external scanners.
In this case, the Scanner Profile window needs to remain empty, like this:

When empty, the DataWedge Profile0 (default) is used.
Velocity Scripts that use involve scanning cannot be used when the DataWedge Scan Driver is used.
