When using ZebraDesigner Pro v2 you have the ability to link fields to data in a spreadsheet or database file.  The following procedure illustrates how to do so.  This can be done with both Barcode and Text fields on the label and the process is the same with the exception of selecting either Barcode or Text from the Objects Toolbar on the left hand side of the software.  

1.  Select Barcode or Text from the Object Selection Toolbar on the left hand side of the software and then click on the blank label template to open the object wizard.  Make sure to select Variable Data under the type.  In this example we will create a variable barcode object:

Note:  You can modify the font or barcode type you are using by clicking on the Define button in the lower right section of the wizard:

2.  Once you have your variable data field created, click next and make sure to select database as the type of variable field to be used, click next:

 3.  The following dialog box will allow for you to define the database/spreadsheet that you would like to link the field data to.  Click define and browse to the file that needs to be connected:

4.  After the database/spreadsheet file is selected click next and you will be able to define which field from the database/spreadsheet you would like to connect to the text or barcode object:

5.  After clicking next you will be able to specify how you want records to be selected as well as how to specify the quantities for the records when printing.  You can either specify that you would like to print all records from the table when printing or you can select the records you need printed at print time.  As far as quantity goes, you can either specify that you want one label for every record in the database, you can choose to have a field in the database/spreadsheet specify the quantity, or you can enter the quantity at the time of printing for the labels.  In this example we have chosen to select the records and the quantity at print time:

6.  After proceeding you will see the Field Usage dialog box.  Here you can specify that you want a text field for each field you selected (see step 4) or you can link the database fields to label text fields at a later point.  In this example we choose to link the fields to text objects at a later point in time:

7.  The last step in the wizard is to add a prefix or suffix to the object data.  This is optional and can be left blank if no prefix or suffix is required:

8.  After clicking finish your barcode or text field will appear on the label.  If it appears in red, it is too large or outside of the boundaries of the printable label.  You will have to resize the barcode to make it fit within the label template.  It should turn black once within the boundaries of the label:

To resize the barcode/text, click on one of the squares and drag it to modify the size of object until it is black and within the boundaries of the label:

Note:  You can center your barcode by clicking the centering icon options on the right side toolbar as well as holding the control key in on your keyboard and clicking on the top center sizing square.  The square should turn white if clicked:

9.  Once you have the barcode placed as you would like it, you can attempt printing.  Click the File dropdown and select print or click on the Print icon within the toolbar.  This will open the print dialog box.  The print dialog box will display based off how you previously chose to select your records and quantities (see step 5).  In this example we have chosen to select which records to print as well as the quantity at print time:

This will open the record selection wizard with which you can select the records you need to print and the quantity of each then click OK:

10.  At this point you should have your database/spreadsheet linked to your label object, the records you need to print selected, and quantities specified.  You can preview the print sequence if you would like and then click print to initiate the print job.  The same steps can be taken to create more fields linked to that data if needed.

Note: If you wish to use data obtained from a linked database as the data in a UCC-128 or GS1-128 type barcode element, the wizard only allows keyboard entry. It is not a supported feature of the ZebraDesigner Pro software to accept data from a database for this bar code symbology. You will need to explore options provided through third party software providers for this to be an option.
