HACKATHON

We present you with a new twist on an old favorite. If you want to hack at APPFORUM, follow these few simple rules:

Who Can Play

  • Anyone who registers AND attends APPFORUM
  • Participate individually or as part of a team
  • Up to five (5) members per team

How It Works

  • Registerfor APPFORUM on our official registration site:
  • Check "Yes" for the Hackathon question.
  • You have many weeks (instead of a few java-fueled hours) to build a winning app.
  • Create your app on any mobile device, using any OS.
  • Development tools, frameworks and application focus are up to you—you may use anything you choose.
  • Build your app to operate in the target market categories of Retail, Warehouse/Transportation & Logistics, Manufacturing, Public Safety/Public Awareness, Healthcare and Education.
  • The first 100 developers that register for the Hackathon will each receive two FREE beacons for MPact, Zebra’s new locationing technology. Learn about MPact.
  • Watch for Challenges and incorporate these into your app.
  • Retrieve your MPact beacons from the mail and BEGIN!

Challenges

We will plant Challenges along the way for hackers to address in their apps. Below is the first challenge:

Challenge #1: Location is EVERYTHING:

  • Develop your app to include MPact’s location-based technology, using your FREE MPact beacons.
  • Let your mind soar beyond the retail community (where this technology is most popular) to discover new ways to adapt locationing to other vertical markets
  • Be inspired (not limited) by established MPactuse cases:
  • The MPact beacons are yours to keep, no strings attached.

Challenge #2: EARN YOUR STRIPES

  • In this challenge, participants are requested to incorporate printing to a Zebra printer from their application.
  • All the code resources you need are found here
  • Be prepared to wow the judges with your app that prints a label and get an extra 200 points for doing so! (Printers will be available at AppForum to test your app.)
  • Include any combination of Error handling, Status Reporting, etc from your application for extra points!

Viva Las Vegas

  • Visit the Zebra Developer Bar to answer last-minute questions or refine any code in flight.
  • All apps must be presented in person during APPFORUM.
  • All apps MUST WORK.
  • All teams must sign up for a 10-minute time slot on Wednesday, September 23 to present apps to the judging panel.
  • Stick around for the closing session, because that’s when we’ll announce the winners.

Here Come the Judges

A panel of judges will vote on the most innovative applications using a point system that scores the degree to which you leverage your skills and available tools. Hackers with the most points win.

  • Judges will award points to functioning apps based on whether your app is:
    • unique and innovative;
    • easy to use;
    • graphically appealing;
    • technically challenging.
  • Points are also awarded based on whether your app:
    • uses MPact locationing technology;
    • uses Android;
    • runs on more than one operating system;
    • uses HTML5/RhoMobile/some other multi-platform application framework;
    • uses hardware device features (imaging, scanning, magnetic stripe, camera, RFID, Accelerometer, GPS, etc.);
    • is developed in native language using EMDK.
  • Apps also earn points if they:
    • use printing;
    • encode RFID tags on a printer;
    • use advanced communications with a printer (error handling, status reporting, etc.);
    • use RhoConnect to fetch data;
  • You will also be scored on the effectiveness of your presentation.
  • For your presentation, your team shall:

Sponsorship

Zebra extends special thanks to our sponsors who help us bring you this informative and fun event. We’d be hard pressed to do this without their generous support. Each of our sponsors has a unique offering for developers, and APPFORUM provides a great atmosphere for you to meet with each sponsor to see if you can utilize their value add. Representatives of each of our sponsors will be hanging out with us over the two day event in the Zebra Café or our evening ice breaker and networking sessions. Be sure to make time to meet each one.
