Solution

This resolution details the suggestions or items to check when experiencing an “Error Condition Ribbon System” on the 110PAX4. One or more of these observations or procedures may be required to eliminate the error.

  • How many printers are having this problem and what are the serial numbers? If you have printers that are functioning, it would be good to compare product and firmware versions to isolate the issue. Also compare configuration labels and review any differences to the printer settings. (User Guide Page 61 Read More>>)
  • Is this a new installation? If so make sure the printer settings are correct and also verify the driver settings as they will overwrite any printer configurations.
  • Has the ribbon been loaded as shown in the User Manual? Failure to load the printer exactly as shown in the User Manual can result in Ribbon Errors. (User Guide Page 46 Read More>>)
  • Is the ribbon sensor clean as well as the reflective plate? (User Guide Page 91 Read More>>)
  • What is the width of the ribbon? The width of the ribbon must be taken into consideration since the pressure toggle position could impact the printer's ability to move the ribbon reliably. You would want to use ribbon that is slightly wider than the media and balance the toggle pressure over the media for best results. (User Guide Page 95 Read More>>)
  • What is the length of the ribbon? Using partially used ribbons is not recommended since the printer determines ribbon warning based on spindle rotation speed.
  • Is there a core on the ribbon take-up spindle or is the ribbon directly rolled onto the spindle? It is not recommended to place the ribbon directly on the spindle since it does not accommodate easy removal and could be slipping resulting in ribbon errors.
  • Is the printer located in a very bright environment or in direct sunlight? The printer uses infrared sensors and many light sources emit this wavelength that can impact the sensor readings.
  • Looking closely at the ribbon and media movement, do you see any difference or inconsistency in movement? Any ribbon slippage that causes inconsistent spindle movement and can result in an error. If the speeds are different, increase the printhead pressure and have it evenly positioned on the media and ribbon path.

These are possible corrective actions if all the above observations and configurations have been verified.

  • Try reducing the print speed to see if that shows any improvement in function. This would be set by your application, driver, or software.

  • Default the printer and re-calibrate the printer. (User Guide Page 59  Read More>>)

  • Print a Sensor Profile from the LCD.  (User Guide Page 76  Read More>>)

  • Perform the full media and ribbon calibration via the LCD menu. This calibrates all the sensors and you will be required to load the backing and remove the ribbon as part of the process (User Guide Page 53  Read More>>)

  • Try loading the latest firmware.

If all the above suggestions do not fix the problem there is a possible issue with a printer component or circuit that will require servicing. Consult your service options to resolve the issue.   Read More>>
