If the original operating system of an MC90xx terminal is .NET, (also known as Embedded OS), it cannot be upgraded to WM/PPC2003. There are circuitry differences between the two hardware portions and also licensing issues.
The WM/PPC2003 terminals require a CODEC (to make music and such). .NET units only have a beeper.
Some .NET units have a 32MB/32MB memory configuration and WM/PPC2003 requires at least 64MB/64MB.
