Enabling the USB Option in TCM for the MC9000 Series

Symptom

User has a USB connection for their MC9000 series terminal, but when they attempt to use TCM to flash the device, there is no option for a USB connection.

Root Cause

The USB option is not enabled or available by default.

Resolution

Set up USB connection before starting TCM. Must be using TCM 2.00.07 or later.

For Windows XP:
Enter IPL mode on the mobile device, putting it into USB download mode, as instructed in the following steps  
  1. On the 'Select Transport' menu, select 'USB'.
  2. On the 'USB Configuration' menu, select 'USB Standard'.  
  3. On the 'Download File?' menu, select 'Download'.
  4. Connect the USB cable to the PC. The driver installation process for the "Symbol USB Download Port" will begin.
  5. The PC will indicate that new USB hardware has been found, and display the "New Hardware Found" installation wizard.
  6. Select "Install from a list or specific location" and press the Next button to continue.
  7. There is a checkbox labeled "Include this location in the search" with the path indicating where to find the driver files.  Select this checkbox and select the Next button to continue.
  8. A warning is displayed, indicating that the driver being installed has not passed Windows Logo testing. This is expected. Press the "Continue Anyway" button to proceed.
  9. The driver is properly installed and a final wizard screen appears indicating that the installation is complete.  Select Finish to close the Wizard.
  10. Now that the USB driver is installed, whenever this device is waiting in USB download mode and connected to the PC, the "USB: Symbol Device" port will be available in the "COM Port" field of the TCM's "Load Terminal" dialog.

For Windows 2000
Enter IPL mode on the mobile device, putting it into USB download mode (steps to follow).
  1. On the 'Select Transport' menu, select 'USB'.
  2. On the 'USB Configuration' menu, select 'USB Standard'.   
  3. On the 'Download File?' menu, select 'Download'.
  4. Connect the USB cable to the PC. The driver installation process for the "Symbol USB Download Port" will begin.
  5. The PC will indicate that new USB hardware has been found, and display the "New Hardware Found" installation wizard.
  6. Select "Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended)".  Select the Next button to continue.
  7. The checkbox labeled "Specify a location" will be checked. Select the Next button to continue.
  8. The path indicating where to find the driver files will be automatically entered in the text field.  Select the OK button to continue.
  9. The Found New Hardware Wizard will indicate it found a driver for the device. Select Next to continue.
  10. The driver is properly installed and a final wizard screen appears indicating that the installation is complete. Select Finish to close the Wizard.
  11. Now that the USB driver is installed, whenever this device is waiting in USB download mode and connected to the PC, the "USB: Symbol Device" port will be available in the "COM Port" field of the TCM's "Load Terminal" dialog.
