What is GPS week number roll over?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) started its clock on 6th of January 1980 at 00:00:00. GPS uses 10-bit (0-1023) week number to identify how many weeks have passed since that start date.
For example:

  • 6th Jan 1980, the week number will be 0;
  • 13th Jan 1980, the week number will be 1; and so on.

The 10-bit week number will rollover every 1024 weeks or approximately 19.6 years called epoch.
To report the current time, GPS receivers normally compute extended GPS weeks or cumulative GPS weeks.
The first week number rollover (1023 to 0) occurred at on 22nd August 1999 at 00:00:00 GPS time. The next GPS week rollover will occur on:

  • April 7, 2019 (Extended GPS week 2048, 10-bit week 0)
  • November 21, 2038 (Extended GPS week 3072, 10-bit week 0)
