1.  FAQs on End of Life of FX9500 and Its Replacement Product

Q: Why is FX9500 end-of-life?
A: Zebra Technologies has announced the end of sale of the FX9500 Fixed RFID Reader which has been a leader in the fixed RFID market for quite some time. In 2017 we experienced critical supply chain issues with end-of-life components on the FX9500. Due to the shortages in supply chain and the market’s need for an improved industrial fixed reader, Zebra Technologies declares the EOL of FX9500 and introduces the next generation FX9600 Industrial Fixed RFID Reader as the replacement product for FX9500. 

Q: Why does Zebra introduce FX9600 as a replacement product for FX9500?
A: The next generation FX9600 Industrial Fixed RFID Reader retains the rugged form and fit of the FX9500 but adds many of the great features found on the FX7500 fixed reader that users depend on today. FX9600 is a rugged, IP53 sealed, high performance reader and is suitable for use outdoor or in environments with high humidity and moisture. It is also powered by FX7500 software architecture/platform and most features and functions like auto-discovery, configuration, web-console are similar to the FX7500.

 

2.  FAQs on Application Development

Q: Will host based applications implemented for the FX9500 work on the FX9600?
A: Both FX9500 and FX9600 support the RFID3 API interface and all the FX9600 developer tools are backward compatible with RFID3 API set. Host based applications (in C, .Net, Java) developed using RFID3 API to work with FX9500 are expected to work seamlessly with FX9600.
 

Note:
FX9600 doesn’t support (Sirit/3M) C2-API, so if customers have host based application that utilizes C2-API to communicate with FX9500, it needs to be migrated to the application based on RFID3 API to work with FX9600
FX9600 supports many new features that are also found on FX7500 but not available to FX9500. In order to programmatically access these reader specific features, customers should implement host based application (in C, .Net, Java) via FX9600 developer tools (Latest EMDK SDK with FXSeries Host Programming SDK Update). Q: Can FX9600 support embedded application? What developer tools are available?
A: The FX9600 has the ability to host embedded applications (in C and Java) for standalone reader operation, eliminating the need to connect the reader to a host PC in many applications. The FX9600 uses the same Zebra Embedded RFID3 API as the FX7500 fixed readers. Please refer to the FXSeries Embedded Software Developer Kit information in the Reference section to know more details.
 



3.  FAQs on Reader Installation & Configuration

Q: How many antenna ports can FX9600 support? Does FX9600 support bistatic antenna operation? 
A: The FX9600 is available in 4- and 8-port antenna configurations. And due to low usage in the market, FX9600 doesn’t support bistatic operation. It only supports monostatic antenna operation. 
 
Q: Can FX9600 be powered by PoE (Power over Ethernet)?
A: Yes. In addition to the +24V DC external power supply, the FX9600 can be powered by PoE (802.3af) and PoE+ (802.3at) which eliminates the need for costly power drops at each reader location.

Q: How many GPIO ports can FX9600 support? Can I use a FX9500 GPIO connector for FX9600? 
A: Both FX9500 and FX9600 support extended GPIO for 4 inputs and 4 Outputs, but there are certain differences between FX9500 and FX9600 in terms of GPIO connector pinouts, hence, a GPIO connector used for FX9500 cannot be used for FX9600.  The following figures show the FX9600 and FX9500 GPIO Connector pinouts

Q: How can I upgrade the FX9600 RFID reader firmware? 
A: There are three supported ways to upgrade the FX9600 RFID reader firmware.

Method 1:
Unzip images and copy to a USB drive. Connect USB drive to FX9600 reader. Upgrade will automatically start in 7-10 seconds.
Method 2:
Copy images to local drive of PC, log in to the FX9600 reader’s web console, select ‘File based upgrade’ on reader upgrade webpage. Select image to upgrade from local PC. Click ‘Start upgrade’
Method 3:
Copy images to FTP server, log in to the FX9600 reader’s web console, select ‘FTP upgrade’ on reader upgrade webpage, enter username and password of the FTP server. Click ‘Start upgrade’. (a FTP/SCP/FTPS server can be used to upgrade the readers.)
Note: The latest version of PowerSession demo application (v0.50.4) can also be used to upgrade multiple FX Series readers (FX7500, FX9600) with a single operation.

Q: What demo application can I use to configure and demonstrate the capabilities of the FX9600? 
A: The latest version of PowerSession demo application (v0.50.4) can discover, configure and demonstrate many functions and features of the FX9600 reader including the ability to perform firmware updates on multiple readers at once.
