Resolution / Answer

WLAN configuration requires adherence to regulations of the governing WiFi /RF authority in the region it is used. In some cases, functionality will be reduced if the correct country code is not applied to the device configuration, as there is no regulatory instruction to apply in a lawful manner. There are some device configurations that will not list the US as a country to select manually or through the automatic process of 802.11d.

With US part number the 802.11d country code is essentially hard coded -- only US will be listed as country code for WLAN. The FCC requirement to list only US country code in the devices sold in US was notified within the last few years. Only the devices with US part number are sold in US. The RoW variant is sold in other countries, and these will not list US country.

In older products (which were released before FCC required to have a separate part number for US), some of the RoW part numbers included US as well, and these RoW part numbers were sold in the US. However, with the latest products, we will have only 2 part numbers, US and RoW, with respect to the regulatory.

These part numbers are not used by WAN radio to identify which country they are operating in. For WAN / cellular operation, there is no functional or regulatory difference between the US and RoW configurations.
