Overview

In order to use a printer in a virtual machine, such as Windows XP Mode in Windows 7, there are some extra steps required to successfully connect the printer. Note: The following steps were taken and modified from Microsoft's site Read More>>

Procedure

Install the printer on the virtual operating system

1. Install the printer driver in the guest operating system.

2. Attach the device to the physical computer and turn on the printer.

3. From the virtual machine window, click USB and then click Attach [device name] (see screenshot below).

4. Windows looks for and tries to install the printer driver in the guest operating system. You can also do this yourself, just as you would on a physical computer.

5. Wait until the printer has been fully initialized and you see a message stating “Your new hardware is installed and ready to use”. At this point, the driver installation has been completed and the printer will now be available in the guest operating system.

6. To make the printer available on the host operating system, release it from the virtual machine. From the virtual machine window, click USB and then click Release [device name].
