Troubleshooting print quality issues on Zebra Kiosk Printers

The following can be checked for print quality issues:

  • No print or light print on one side.

Check the media. Ensure that receipt paper is not upside down. With direct thermal paper you can scratch the surface and see which side turns black, this is the side that should be printed on.

On the TTP 2000 and TTP 2100 series printers ensure that the media guide is installed properly by checking to see if the paper guide is properly seated. To check this remove the screw on the rear of the printer just above the communication and power connectors and make sure that the guide is completely pushed light print on one side would result in an improper installed paper guide. If  this issue continues to happen remove the guide and run a test print. If this prints properly then the paper guide will need to be replaced.

Check the print head. Ensure that the print head is clean and debris is not blocking the elements of the printhead. The print head can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. If the printers have a sharp streak in their printouts this may be caused by a damaged print head and may need to be repaired or replaced.

Ensure that the print head is firmly latched and in the closed position. The TTP 8200/8300 series printer has two latches on each side and should be firmly secured.

Check the platen roller. Debris can cause issues to the platen roller. It is common for the platen to become very dirty over time and may require cleaning. Debris can be blown out with an air dusting can or cleaned with 99.7% isopropyl alcohol.

  • Print is not dark enough.

The darkness of the printout depends on the print speed and the time allowed to burn the pixels. Therefore with faster speed and you may get a lighter printout. Slower speeds and higher burn times can darken the print. Media sensitvity should also be taken into consideration where if the media is high in sensitivity you may get a darker printout than with media that is lower in sensitivity.

Darkness can be adjusted using the Windows driver by going to Printer Properties of the driver and changing Burn time and/or Print Speed or you can change parameter 7 (Burn Time) and paramter 8 (Print Speed) on the printer.
