The proper length has not been set or the correct code type has not been enabled.

Resolution

Set the correct Interleaved 2 of 5 bar code length or enable Codabar code type.

Follett Software Company commonly produces Codabar, Code 39 (Code 3 of 9), or Interleaved 2 of 5 bar codes (Follett literature refers to this code type as Follett Classic) types when creating bar codes for library use.

Code 39 is enabled on default in Symbol handheld scanners.  It does not need to be enabled unless it has previously been disabled.

Interleaved 2 of 5 is enabled, but the default code length is set to 14.  The scanner will only decode bar codes that are exactly 14 characters in length.  If your bar code has either more or less than 14 characters the scanner will not decode the bar code.  If all of your bar codes are all the same length, set the scanner to read the correct length by scanning the “I 2 of 5 - One Discrete Length” programming bar code followed by a two numeric bar codes equal to your bar code length from the appropriate Product Reference Guide.  If your bar code is ten digits long you would scan “I 2 of 5 One Discrete Length”, “1”, ”0”.  If your bar codes are varying lengths you can scan the “I 2 of 5 – Any Length” programming bar code.  The scanner will then decode any length Interleaved 2 of  5 bar code that is presented.

Codabar code type is not enabled on default.  The “Enable Codabar” programming bar code should be scanned to enable this code type.

 Note: If the bar code is still not read it is possible the symbol is a Follett bar code and not supported by Symbol scanners.
