Machine Vision and Robotics Automation Will Support Italy’s Sustainable Manufacturing Recovery
Zebra Technologies will highlight key recovery trends and technologies at SPS Italia
BOURNE END, England – 23 May, 2023 – Zebra Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: ZBRA), a leading digital solution provider enabling businesses to intelligently connect data, assets, and people, advocates for machine vision and robotics automation technologies to support Italy’s improved manufacturing industry. The company will showcase these and other solutions at SPS Italia from May 23-25 in Pavilion 3, stand H053 at the Fiere di Parma Exhibition Centre.
The most recently published S&P Global Italy Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index indicates operating conditions in Italy's manufacturing sector improved in March for a third consecutive month, supported by gains in output, new orders, and employment.
“These improvements can continue with the use of technology solutions like machine vision and robotics automation,” said Enzo Tumminaro, Italy Country Manager, Zebra Technologies. “These technologies help secure and optimise operations and enable front-line workers to focus on more strategic tasks.”
Recent developments in Italy’s manufacturing sector have been marked by a clear emphasis on sustainability, alongside speed, safety, accuracy and efficiency requirements. These include a major automotive OEM committing to fully electric vehicle production, the creation of the largest solar panel manufacturing plant in Europe, and a €450 million European Commission scheme to support the production of renewable hydrogen and electricity.
Italy currently has 24 automotive assembly and production plants, placing it among the highest in Europe. Automotive industry decision-makers are increasingly focused on expanding sustainability, waste reduction, and environmental protection initiatives. According to Zebra’s Automotive Ecosystem Vision Study, 27% of decision-makers say these initiatives are drivers of financial performance and growth, and 49% expect it to be within the next five years.
Italy is also one of Europe’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers and exporters but has recently faced challenges. In 2022, the total production costs of generic medicines in Italy increased by 21% compared to 2021. At least one pharmaceutical association leader has called for policy and investment in tools to make the production chain more controllable, safe and durable.

These advancements also benefit sustainability developments and the front-line engineers tasked with ensuring compliance, quality, assembly accuracy, and timely delivery to the end user.
MOSAIC is an international electrical, software, and mechanical engineering company with an office in Italy. The company leverages Matrox Imaging machine vision technology to provide solutions to the automotive and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries. Matrox Imaging was acquired by Zebra in 2022, expanding and deepening Zebra’s machine vision portfolio.

At SPS Italia, Zebra will showcase its full portfolio of powerful machine vision hardware and software options for engineers, programmers and data scientists, delivering ready-made tools and development environments to create and deploy machine vision systems for automotive and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Visitors will see live demonstrations of the latest smart cameras, machine vision systems and 3D profile scanners from Matrox Imaging. The stand will also feature Zebra's growing Aurora software portfolio for flexible machine vision application development.
“We can expect to see an 83% leap in automotive OEMs using machine vision between now and 2027, according to Zebra’s Automotive Ecosystem Vision Study,” said Tumminaro. “And there are new tools like deep learning OCR software with a ready-to-use neural network pre-trained using thousands of different image samples. It can deliver high accuracy straight out of the box, even when dealing with very difficult cases.”
According to the World Robotics Report 2022, robot installations across Europe were up 24% in 2021 with steady demand from the automotive industry. Robot installations were up 17% in Italy during that timeframe, ranking the country second in the region.
Zebra will also demonstrate its robotics automation solutions for materials movement workflows at SPS Italia in the form of Fetch autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and Zebra’s cloud-based FetchCore software. Depending on the use case, Zebra customers have witnessed 2-3X throughput and productivity increases, floor space gains and significantly reduced the physical toll on workers. One customer eliminated 1,000 kilometres (621 miles) of manual travel within the first six months of deploying a Zebra Fetch robotics automation solution.
“As Italy’s manufacturing industry recovers and grows so too will the use of robotics automation, with an approach that moves from islands to ecosystems,” said Tumminaro. “Rather than one solution for one use case, we are seeing technologies like AMRs and machine vision systems collaborating and communicating with each other to create finely tuned, automated workflows.”
