#GlobalWeekofService Sneak Peek: How We Plan to Do a World of Good, One Community at a Time

There is a lot you can do virtually these days, including volunteer! This has made it easy for Zebra Nation to give back to local communities during these challenging times as part of the Global Week of Service.

I’ve spoken many times before about how important philanthropy and volunteerism is to Zebra Nation. It’s core to who we are as individuals and as a company. Nothing will change that. The only thing that might change is how we physically “show up” to help. That will likely be apparent during this year’s Global Week of Service.

From September 13-19, 2020, Zebras all around the world are going to take a step away from their daily work to volunteer in their communities either individually or as part of a team. Some will have the opportunity to support charitable organizations and their beneficiaries in person through coordinated, socially-distanced events. Most will showcase the impact and immense capability of virtual volunteerism. But, no matter where they “check in,” there is no doubt that the work they do during this period will leave a lasting impact on those who need a little joy in their lives right now.

For example, they will be:

  • Using the Be My Eyes app to connect blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers through a video call, making the world more accessible for these individuals.
  • Connecting with students through personal LinkedIn accounts to answer career questions on the Career Village platform.
  • Providing emotional support to community members by communicating via the Crisis Text Line.
  • Translating texts for charitable organizations through Translators Without Borders.
  • And much more!

In the meantime, we encourage you to join us in our efforts to make the world a better place – one community and one small act at a time. This is not a one-person (or one week) job. There are numerous trials and tribulations being faced across the globe right now, and there are people in every region in need of a helping hand. By coming together, even virtually, we can provide a sense of renewed strength and spirit to the communities where we live and work.

Struggling to Find Time to Volunteer? Help is Always Appreciated.

While we are encouraging employees to volunteer during our Global Week of Service in September, we understand that many people are struggling to balance their increased work and home responsibilities right now. That’s why we are advocating for Zebras – and you – to give back whenever, however and from wherever possible. Volunteering doesn’t cost a thing, but its impact is priceless.

Just think of all the smiles you’ll create and the lives you could potentially change forever, just by giving someone your undivided attention, your wisdom and your (virtual) smile for a few minutes.

Van Ryne holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Journalism from Marquette University and an Executive Leadership Master’s Certificate from Cornell University.
