Zebra Technologies Launches FR55 Mobile Computer to Support First Responders

Device offers critical broadband, security, multimedia, and data capabilities

BRUSSELS, Belgium – 18 June, 2025 Zebra Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: ZBRA), a global leader in digitising and automating frontline workflows, has launched the FR55 first responder mobile computer to meet the operational requirements of today’s emergency, defence and security sectors. The FR55 is on display at Critical Communications World from 17-19 June, Brussels Expo, Zebra stand H71 in Hall 11.

The FR55 responds to the move from the TETRA digital radio service to 3GPP Mission Critical Services (MCX) on advanced broadband networks. This change is driven by the need to connect the frontline, provide better multimedia and data support, and reduce operating costs. The FR55 meets this need, supporting 4G/LTE and 5G as services gradually move to broadband.

Through MCX integration, the FR55 is interoperable with TETRA and other legacy narrowband systems such as DMR and TETRAPOL. Agnet, an advanced critical communications solution by Airbus, is integrated into the FR55 to enable next-level MCX via broadband.

“Airbus is pleased to support Zebra in launching a new device for the public safety market,” said Mika Laitinen, Head of Portfolio Management for Public Safety and Security, Airbus. “The integration of the FR55 with Agnet will give first responders access to voice, data, live video and location services with high-level encryption at the touch of a button, enhancing their situational awareness.”

The FR55 features 2nd Gen 5G, WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth v5.3 to access secure networks, and Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS) for support in high density areas such as stadiums, marches, and transport hubs. A top-mounted emergency duress button means users can quickly call for help.

“We’ve designed the FR55 starting with what frontline workers need today, giving them a solution that solves issues like low-data bandwidth and limited spectrum availability,” said Oliver Ledgard, Public Safety Strategy Director, EMEA, Zebra Technologies. “The FR55 offers secure multimedia communication as well as advanced data capture, access, and sharing.”

The latest generation Qualcomm® processor with long-term OS support to Android 18 means the FR55 is future-ready for AI and augmented reality. The mobile computer can also run many apps at the same time, deliver rapid data processing, and ensure secure geolocation.

"The requirement for high-performance data devices in the hands of emergency responders has never been greater," said Ken Rehbehn, Principal Analyst, CritComm Insights. "A combination of high-speed 5G mobile data and powerful data processing capabilities is needed to ensure a strong foundation for essential team coordination capabilities, demanded by the increasingly complex response scenarios faced by law enforcement, fire service, and emergency medical teams."

At Critical Communications World, Zebra will also take part in a series of workshops and panels to discuss how mobile technology like the FR55 can support the public safety frontline:

  • Oliver Ledgard will join a CCW panel on ‘IoT Connectivity in Critical Environments’ on Wednesday, 18 June, 14:25–15:00 in Theatre C.
  • Carlos de la Cuesta, Senior Account Manager, Government and Emerging Markets, Zebra Technologies will lead a panel discussion with representatives from Airbus and Qualcomm on ‘Mobile Computing for the Frontline’ on Thursday, 19 June, 14:15–14:45 in Theatre C.
