Use Case
Recurring component defects severely disrupt manufacturing production lines and inflate operational costs. To address this pervasive challenge, 3S Series High-Resolution 3D Sensors, ATR7000 Overhead RFID Readers, ET401 Tablets, and Zebra RFID portals rapidly identify defective batches, contain inventory, and trigger necessary supplier notifications.
Tracing a recurring defect back to a specific batch of components from a supplier presents a pervasive challenge within the manufacturing industry. For example, when a third consecutive rim defect triggers a corrective and preventive action, manual tracking processes consistently fall short. Uncovering root causes remains notoriously difficult to pinpoint quickly without immediate data access and deep visibility into the exact origin of incoming parts on the assembly line.
Failing to rapidly contain defective inventory leads to severe negative consequences, including extraordinarily high costs and frustrating operational bottlenecks. Prolonged defect tracing halts active production lines, resulting in major lost revenue and missed delivery deadlines. Furthermore, unchecked quality issues ultimately cause deep customer dissatisfaction and severely damage long term brand reputation, making swift isolation necessary.
Addressing these defect challenges requires a cohesive setup where the 3S Series, ATR7000, ET401, and RFID portals operate seamlessly together. This synchronised equipment network quickly finds and contains all inventory from the defective batch. Facilities achieve faster identification and resolution of root causes of defects and prevention of future quality issues.
Replacing manual tracking with precise diagnostic tools translates into tangible business value. Facilities experience streamlined quality control workflows, gain clearer visibility into upstream issues leading up to and at the supplier, and reduce the frequency of recurring defects while elevating the standard of final manufactured products across the board.
and resolution of root causes of defects
on upstream issues that originate before components reach production
through faster containment and stronger corrective action with upstream partners
The process begins on the line where the 3S Series High-Resolution 3D Sensor scans components as they pass. Using advanced machine vision capabilities, it instantly detects consecutive rim defects and flags the anomaly. This camera provides the precise imaging required to quickly identify the specific supplier batch associated with the recurring structural flaw, acting as the ideal initial detection point.
Identifying a recurring defect on a production line is only the first step in quality control; the real challenge is rapidly locating and containing the affected batch of parts before they are assembled or shipped. After the recurring defect is identified on the line, warehouse teams use ATR7000 overhead RFID readers to find and contain the affected batch of rims before more parts reach production. This RFID reader helps pinpoint the exact location of the affected batch, letting workers go directly to the defective rims instead of searching the entire warehouse.
The ET401 Tablet displays batch details, location information, and containment instructions. Workers can confirm which inventory needs to be isolated and documented as part of the corrective and preventive action workflow. With its high-speed connectivity and support for Wi-Fi 7 and optional 5G, the ET401 delivers the fast data speeds required to sync immediately with the Warehouse Management System (WMS). This keeps frontline workers connected and ensures that containment actions are updated instantly without database lag.
As part of the corrective and preventive action workflow, the supplier sends the appropriate replacement component, like the correct rim model, to replenish the affected batch. As the new order arrives, the shipment passes through an RFID portal. Every tagged asset is read automatically, even through packaging materials. RFID portals can be used to log the activity directly into your warehouse or inventory management system. This helps eliminate manual tracking slip-ups and prevent the wrong parts from re-entering inventory or moving into production.
Investing in this structured quality management system provides profound strategic value. Operations benefit from higher inbound component standards, minimised waste, and a resilient production process that protects the bottom line from unforeseen supplier errors.
