Remembering Ed Barkan: A Visionary, Innovator, and Friend

It is with deep sadness and immense gratitude that we remember Edward Donald Barkan, Senior Fellow at Zebra Technologies and a true pioneer in Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC). While we mourn his loss, we celebrate a life defined by innovation, inspiration, and humanity.

A Legacy of Innovation

Often compared to Thomas Edison by his Zebra colleagues, Ed’s contributions revolutionized global business operations. With about 400 patents to his name, his groundbreaking work in barcode scanning and bioptics transformed industries. The handheld scanners he designed, described as the first “truly portable” devices by The New York Times, became a global standard, shaping retail, logistics, and healthcare.

Ed joined Symbol Technologies in 1977 as its first full-time employee, where he led the development of the first handheld laser scanner. His philosophy of “relentless simplicity” influenced decades of product design, including the iconic LS 2208 scanner, which remains in use today. His visionary approach built Zebra’s foundation and also created an entire industry.

A Humble Innovator

Despite his monumental achievements, Ed remained remarkably humble. He often credited his success to teamwork and a willingness to approach problems from multiple perspectives. A natural innovator, Ed drew on his early experiences working in machine shops and designing servo motor drives, which gave him a deep appreciation for the practicalities of engineering.

His ability to traverse multiple disciplines, whether it was designing production fixtures, grinding lenses, or working with lasers, set him apart as a versatile and prolific problem solver. Ed’s contributions extended beyond technical innovations. His leadership philosophy emphasized collaboration, curiosity, and resilience. As he once reflected, “The impossible may become possible if we just stick with it a little longer, work harder, and come up with a better idea.”

Carrying His Legacy Forward

Ed’s story is Zebra’s story. His vision and determination helped the company evolve into a global leader in workflow digitization and automation. His influence extended far beyond Zebra, shaping industries and improving lives worldwide. Ed was also passionate about education, mentoring future innovators and supporting STEM initiatives.

In Memoriam

Zebra Nation extends its deepest condolences to Ed’s loved ones. We are honored to carry his legacy forward by embracing the values he championed: creativity, determination, and a relentless pursuit of progress.

Thank you, Ed, for your brilliance, kindness, and unwavering belief in human ingenuity. Your legacy is eternal, and your spirit will forever inspire us. Rest in peace.
