Remembering Ed Kaplan: A Visionary Leader and Beloved Co-Founder

It is with a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Ed Kaplan, a remarkable visionary, and the beloved co-founder of Zebra Technologies. Ed was a pioneer in the technology industry and a beacon of inspiration whose legacy will continue to shape the future of our company and the countless individuals he influenced throughout his lifetime.

In 1969, a simple conversation at a dining room table between Ed Kaplan, then 26, and then 28-year-old Gary Cless, laid the foundation for what would become a transformative force in the technology sector. With a modest capital investment, Ed and Gary embarked on a journey that would see Zebra Technologies grow from its humble beginnings as Data Specialties, Inc. to a global leader in digitizing and automating workflows for the frontline of business.

Ed’s spirit of ingenuity and determination was pivotal in Zebra’s rise to prominence. In the early days, the company focused on engineering paper tape punches for point-of-sale transactions. Despite facing significant challenges, Ed’s unwavering belief in the potential of innovative technology led to the breakthrough adoption of thermal transfer technology for barcode printing. This innovation was a game-changer in our industry.

Throughout his tenure as CEO from 1969 until his retirement in 2007, Ed’s leadership style was characterized by resilience, optimism, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Under his guidance, Zebra expanded its workforce from 200 employees in 1991 to 2,000 by 2013, and today, we are nearly 10,000 strong. This incredible growth is a testament to Ed’s visionary approach and his ability to inspire those around him.

Ed’s impact extended far beyond the walls of Zebra Technologies. He was deeply committed to education and mentorship, recognizing the power of knowledge and the importance of empowering individuals to pursue their dreams. He left an indelible mark on the lives of countless people, encouraging them to strive for greatness and make meaningful contributions to society.

As we reflect on Ed’s extraordinary journey, we are reminded of his relentless pursuit of the seemingly impossible. His belief that “the impossible may become possible if we just would stick with it somewhat longer, work a little harder, come up with a better idea, and simply look at things in an optimistic way,” continues to inspire us as we chart the course for Zebra’s future.

In remembrance of Ed Kaplan, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We invite you to join us in celebrating his life and the incredible legacy he leaves behind.
