Use Case

Automating final inspection

Diagnostic failures during final vehicle inspection create immediate bottlenecks. Resolving these delays requires rapid identification and routing using RFID tags, RFID portals, and tablets to restore peak operational efficiency.

Overcoming final diagnostic failure delays

When a vehicle fails a specific diagnostic test during an automated final inspection, such as a mass air flow sensor fault, the entire production flow is compromised. The root cause of this disruption is often the manual effort required to locate, flag, and remove the defective vehicle from the active line. Relying on visual cues and manual data entry creates a sluggish response to sudden quality control events in the manufacturing environment.

The negative consequences of these delays extend deep into overall profitability and yield. High costs quickly accumulate as operational bottlenecks stall downstream processes and idle the workforce. Manufacturers ultimately face lost revenue and missed delivery targets when defective units are not swiftly redirected, leading to significant inefficiencies and growing customer dissatisfaction.

The automated final inspection solution

Combining highly accurate location hardware with mobile intelligence addresses the pressing need to swiftly move failed vehicles to designated rework areas. Using specific tracking devices and mobile interfaces delivers faster and more accurate inspections alongside significantly reduced labour costs. This precise approach transforms reactive quality control into a proactive strategy.

How the solution works

A manufacturing worker uses a tablet during the final inspection of a car on an assembly line, while a Zebra fixed industrial scanner inspects the vehicle's windshield.

Tag the vehicle for immediate identification

An RFID tag gets placed on a vehicle early in the assembly process. When a vehicle fails a diagnostic test, this tag enables the automated flagging and movement from the inspection line to a designated rework area for diagnosis and repair. The passive tracking capabilities of this component effortlessly store and transmit critical vehicle status information without requiring direct line of sight.

A car moves to the next station in the final inspection line, where a Zebra fixed industrial scanner continues to scan and verify vehicle components.

Capture location data across the facility

As the vehicle enters final inspection, Zebra RFID Portals automatically read the vehicle's RFID tag and identify that it has reached the mechanical inspection area. This triggers the mechanical inspection checklist to appear on the worker’s Zebra Tablet, helping ensure the right inspection steps are completed at the right point in the process. Once the checklist is completed, the vehicle can continue to the next inspection stage with a clear, digital record of its progress.

Manage diagnostics and repairs remotely

At the next stage, the RFID portal confirms the vehicle’s movement into the next inspection area and the tablet updates the workflow accordingly. If a problem like a mass air flow issue is detected at this stage, the system alerts the appropriate floor managers and repair technicians, pulls the vehicle from the active inspection line, and creates a work order to route it to rework. This gives teams real-time visibility into the failure and helps them prepare the tools, parts, and next steps needed before the vehicle arrives.

Maximising production throughput and strategic value

Investing in automated inspection tracking delivers substantial financial returns by eliminating costly production delays. This modern approach drives long-term business growth by optimising workforce productivity and elevating overall manufacturing standards.
