Use Case

Tracking freeze-sensitive vaccine inventory

Managing freeze-sensitive vaccines in healthcare causes immense operational strain and potential inventory loss. By equipping cartons with Zebra RFID Labels, the Zebra RFD40 RAIN RFID Sled, and the Zebra FREEZEmarker, pharmacies quickly locate and verify viable vaccines without risking temperature changes.

Healthcare worker uses a Zebra RFD40 RFID Sled to scan vaccine cartons inside a refrigerator to track temperature-sensitive inventory.

Vaccine inventory location and safety

Freeze-sensitive vaccines are permanently destroyed if they are exposed to freezing conditions. Within the healthcare sector, pharmacies are burdened with the need to instantly locate specific vaccine batches hidden inside dense cold storage units. They must also visually verify that these delicate pharmaceuticals have not been compromised by freezing temperatures. Manually digging through refrigerators to find specific cartons lets out cold air and triggers dangerous temperature fluctuations across the entire storage unit.

These inefficient search methods create significant operational bottlenecks for busy pharmacy staff. Repeated temperature fluctuations cause high costs associated with replacing destroyed vaccine batches. Furthermore, dispensing compromised vaccines leads to lost revenue, immense regulatory risks, and severe patient safety issues that negatively impact the overall reputation of the healthcare facility.

The solution for detecting whether a vaccine froze during storage or transport

Modernising pharmaceutical workflows allows healthcare facilities to rapidly identify safe inventory. Applying Zebra RFID Labels to cartons and using the Zebra RFD40 RAIN RFID Sled helps pharmacy staff locate inventory without manually digging through refrigerators. The addition of the Zebra FREEZEmarker provides an irreversible visual alert for pinpoint environmental temperature checks. Combining these tools delivers rapid bulk inventory localisation while drastically reducing the time spent with open refrigerator doors to prevent administration of compromised doses.

Potential benefits

Adopting modern tracking technology transforms challenging pharmacy workflows into highly efficient processes. Implementing these automated location and verification methods helps healthcare facilities achieve measurable operational improvements and maintain strict compliance standards for delicate medical inventory.

How the solution works

Establish distinct digital identities for every carton

Zebra RFID labels can be applied directly to the packaging of delicate medical supplies, providing strong adhesion to glass, high-surface energy plastics and curved surfaces, with bond strength increasing over time. Built to withstand extreme environments and direct chemical exposure, including isopropyl alcohol, bleach and cleaning agents, these labels serve as the foundational identification method for vaccines. Applying them to each unit helps facilities track individual batches accurately and prepares inventory for rapid RFID processes that reduce manual counting and physical searches.

Drive uninterrupted care with seamless clinical connectivity

In this workflow, Zebra HC50 and HC55 clinical mobile computers give healthcare workers a dedicated device for accessing inventory applications and supporting vaccine tracking. The HC50 supports Wi-Fi 6E connectivity inside healthcare facilities, while the HC55 adds 5G/4G cellular connectivity for workflows beyond the facility. Both are disinfectant-ready for clinical use, and the bright 6-inch Full HD+ display works with thin gloves, helping pharmacy staff review inventory information and use healthcare applications without interrupting workflows.

Rapidly identify target batches without physical searching

When conducting inventory or searching for a specific batch, pharmacy staff can connect a Zebra HC50 or HC55 mobile computer to the Zebra RFD40 RAIN RFID Sled to quickly scan the storage area. The sled enables rapid bulk inventory localisation without manual digging through the fridge. This helps prevent cold air from escaping because staff know where required items are located before fully accessing the storage unit. With Zebra’s proprietary radio technology, RFD40 reads over 1,300 tags per second, and its IP54 sealing and broad operating temperature range support dependable clinical use.

Verify environmental safety with a quick visual check

Once the required cartons are located, workers visually check the Zebra FREEZEmarker attached to the packaging. The indicator supports unit-level temperature checks with an irreversible visual alert that changes a green circle to opaque white if exposure to freezing conditions occurs. If the circle turns partially or completely white, staff can identify a freeze event and follow the facility’s established temperature-excursion procedure. If the green circle and white checkmark remain visible, the indicator has not detected exposure at or below its specified response temperature.

Improved pharmaceutical inventory management

Modernising inventory workflows drastically reduces financial losses associated with destroyed vaccines. Facilities increase overall staff productivity while confidently delivering safe treatments to patients with minimal operational friction and reduced compliance risks.
