Chalk Talk Episode with Brandon Copeland on Giving Back and Gridiron Grit

It was a privilege to welcome back former NFL linebacker, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Brandon Copeland to our latest episode of Chalk Talk. While many know him for his impressive 10-year career in the league, it’s his profound impact off the field that truly defines him as a leader.

In our conversation, Brandon shared the powerful story behind his foundation, Beyond the Basics, which he co-founded with his wife, Taylor. It was born from a desire to be a "beacon of light" and a realization that one-off visits aren’t enough to change a child’s environment. This commitment is powerfully embodied in their flagship "December to Remember" event, where each year, Brandon and his NFL colleagues host shopping sprees for children who believe they are attending a community service event to help others.

The surprise and joy are just the beginning. The true magic happens in the aisles. Brandon shared touching stories of children selflessly buying necessities for their families before picking out a single toy for themselves. One memory that stood out was a young boy trying on a new coat and exclaiming with pure joy, “I don’t have to be cold anymore.”

This year, Brandon is adding another layer to the experience by incorporating a budgeting exercise, turning a day of giving into a lasting lesson in financial literacy. It’s a perfect example of his mission to provide not just resources, but skills that last a lifetime.

We also dove into his incredible football journey. Brandon’s path as an undrafted free agent who carved out a decade-long career is a masterclass in resilience. He spoke about the "chip on his shoulder" that fueled him and the invaluable wisdom passed down from his grandfather, who also played in the NFL, who taught him that the "real work begins" right when you think you’ve made it.

Of course, I had to get his take on a few hot topics. We geeked out over some of the amazing insights that Zebra’s Next Gen Stats provides, and how it is changing the game for players and fans alike. We also discussed:

  • The modern linebackers and legendary players who inspired his hard-hitting style.
  • His definitive, and perhaps surprising, verdict on the controversial "tush push."
  • A bold Super Bowl prediction that you won’t want to miss.

Brandon’s story is a powerful reminder that success is about more than just personal achievement; it’s about lifting up those around you. His journey on and off the field is a testament to hard work, purpose, and the relentless drive to make a difference.

Don’t miss this inspiring conversation.
