Use Case

Eliminating in-truck package search bottlenecks

Drivers in the retail sector spend significant time searching truck loads for the next package. The TC501 and TC701 mobile computers, equipped with the on-device Frontline AI Enabler, provide a powerful way to eliminate this manual search process entirely.

Overcoming package search bottlenecks

Retail delivery drivers often spend a significant amount of time manually searching truck loads for the correct package at each stop. This pervasive challenge stems from a lack of immediate visibility into the exact location of specific items within a crowded vehicle. As drivers sift through similar-looking boxes, the time required to complete the route increases, limiting the number of daily stops each driver can successfully manage.

These operational bottlenecks directly lead to high costs and reduced daily productivity on the route. The extra minutes spent searching for packages accumulate, resulting in fewer deliveries per shift and potentially causing late arrivals. This inefficiency reduces overall customer satisfaction and creates lost revenue opportunities, while simultaneously driving up the cost per delivery for the business.

The package search bottleneck solution

Equipping drivers with the right hardware and AI-powered software transforms the delivery process. This powerful combination works together to deliver faster package location and increased daily productivity on the route. By utilizing advanced image capture and recognition technology, workers can pinpoint the exact package they need without the traditional delays of manual searching. Having the data processed directly on your Zebra device also reduces cloud latency and eliminates token costs.

How the solution works

Delivery driver scanning package with Zebra TC501

Navigate cluttered trucks and capture details clearly in any light

Workers begin their route equipped with the Zebra TC501 mobile computer. Powered by the advanced Qualcomm Dragonwing Q-6690 octa-core processor with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), this device is built to handle intensive on-device AI applications. For data capture, it features a superior high-resolution 50 MP rear camera and a high-visibility AMOLED display, offering 1,500 nits peak brightness, to ensure exceptional detail capture and readability in any lighting condition. Drivers can use the TC501 with the AC670 scan engine to scan a barcode and capture a high-quality delivery photo simultaneously in a single action, or use the integrated short-range UHF RFID reader that can capture over 200 tags per second up to 6.5 feet away, to locate specific packages quickly within a dense, cluttered truck environment.

Equip your frontline drivers with elite processing power and precision scanning

For operations using the TC701 mobile computer, drivers gain exceptional data capture and processing performance powered by the latest Qualcomm Dragonwing platform. The device empowers frontline workers to locate specific packages quickly using integrated short-range UHF RFID to capture over 200 tags per second up to 6.5 ft. (2 m) away or use advanced Vision AI to pinpoint items in dense environments. Furthermore, when used with the advanced long-range AC670 scanner, drivers can scan a barcode and capture a high-resolution delivery photo in a single action, ensuring the fast, reliable gathering of essential visual data and proof of delivery to keep drivers on schedule.

Identifying packages instantly

The captured image data from the mobile computers is rapidly processed by  Zebra Frontline AI Enablers run locally on-device. This means that on-device processing eliminates the latency and high costs of cloud solutions. This allows data to be captured and processed in fractions of a second. Frontline AI Enablers uses Multi-Barcode Scanning and Text OCR to evaluate the entire field of view at once. By using multi-barcode and text recognition together to instantly identify the right package, the software highlights the exact item the driver needs. This eliminates guesswork and guides the worker directly to the correct box for the current stop.

Maximizing delivery route efficiency and value

Investing in advanced mobile computers and AI vision software delivers substantial operational and financial value. Businesses will see a significant reduction in delivery costs while empowering their workforce to accomplish more stops with greater accuracy every day.
