IDSTEIN, Germany – May 9, 2014 – Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) equips four supermarkets of the food retail chain EDEKA Handelsgesellschaft Südwest mbH with Motorola’s MC17 mobile self-service solutions. The personal self-scanning and checkout system provides EDEKA customers at the locations Alzenau, Filderstadt/Bonladen, Offenburg and St. Blasien in Germany clearly more customer service.
The supermarkets deploy Motorola MC17 devices as well as one or two automated payment terminals. Before entering the sales area, the EDEKA customers identify themselves at the central MC17 collection point using their DeutschandCards (loyalty cards) and pick a mobile shopping assistant. While shopping, the customer scans the items chosen and then places them in the trolley. There is no need to scan all the purchased items again at the checkout. This saves the customer valuable time as the mobile computer only needs to be read out when the customer has finished shopping. Long waits at the checkout and troublesome unloading of all items onto a conveyor belt are a thing of the past.
Motorola has installed the portable self-scanning solution in collaboration with the software and IT experts Re-Vision and AWEK. Re-Vision is a leading provider in implementing mobile self-scanning solutions and has successfully realized numerous portable shopping projects together with Motorola throughout Europe. The Motorola partner AWEK C-POS has implemented the personal shopping solution at EDEKA as prime contractor in cooperation with the Re-Vision integration partner ABC Retail GmbH. AWEK C-POS offers sophisticated end-to-end IT solutions for retail focusing on POS systems and comprehensive services.
- The mobile self-scanning solution based on the Motorola MC17 self-service terminals supports customers throughout the entire shopping process and – compared to conventional solutions – offers them a unique customer service. Scanning all items while shopping saves the customer valuable time since he does not have to capture all purchased items again at the checkout. For the payment process, customers have the option of paying either at an automated payment machine from AWEK C-POS or at a normal checkout. There, only the total sum is read out and the customer pays his bill.
- The Motorola MC17 has especially been developed for the requirements of retail companies. It offers an integrated high-performance barcode scanner, which can be operated at the click of a button quickly and easily. The MC17 is also equipped with a 2.8-inch colour display with an intuitive user interface, enabling customers to access prices and their sub-totals as well as personalised offers and additional information. The strong battery provides reliable support during the entire shopping process.
- Moreover, the Motorola MC17 stands out through its unique ease of use and lifecycle. The ergonomic design withstands frequent drops, so that the robust device can be reliably used on the sales floor in daily business and offers high cost efficiency. Additionally, the Motorola MC17 can be extended to meet future requirements such as personalised offers.
Motorola’s mobile self-scanning solutions are successfully used in numerous renowned retail companies throughout Europe, for instance by Migros – the largest retailer in Switzerland. The Motorola MC17 also is deployed by the retail chains Coop and Carrefour Belgium. In Germany, the supermarkets of Feneberg are equipped with the portable self-scanning solutions. The technology also is being used in various pilot projects at well-known retailers.
